Experimental Syntax Lab

The Experimental Syntax Lab, directed by Grant Goodall, does research on the syntax of natural language using experimental techniques. We have a special interest in sentence acceptability experiments, but our work is also informed by traditional methods of linguistic research (e.g., fieldwork, introspective judgments) and by psycholinguistic and computational methods (e.g., self-paced reading, corpus studies). Much of our recent work has focused on filler-gap dependencies, including studies on English, Japanese, and Spanish. in both L1 and L2 populations.

We meet weekly during the academic year to discuss our ongoing research projects, to practice upcoming conference presentations, and to read and discuss recent articles of interest.
